I have been an independent contractor in the state of Washington for nearly the past decade. I am part of the 70% to 80% of contractors (a constant number in the research on this topic) who want to remain classified as an independent contractor and I am actively against becoming a W-2 employee. In fact, like 60% of my peers, there is no amount of money that would make me want to choose a W-2 job.

In the beginning, I came to my profession as a freelance writer because of the freedom it gave me to work on a project basis and set my own hours. As long as I delivered the agreed upon product, I did not have to answer to those I was contracting for about how I spent my time. This allowed me to cultivate a work-life balance. Now that I am a mother to a one-year-old, it’s even more important for me to have the ability to choose when and how I am going to work to care for my family, my career, and myself effectively.

During my career as an independent contractor, I have consistently made more money than when I was in traditional W-2-based employment, but beyond that obvious benefit, I have been able to choose how I work and what work I accept. The positive impact of working as an independent contractor on my life cannot be overstated. Now that I have had the chance to grow and operate a small business, I would never willingly choose another way of working.

While many people work as independent contractors, the majority are people like me: women, often parents or caregivers, many of us working in the arts. I am one of many writing to support all of our desire to continue to choose to work on our own terms, with ourselves as our bosses, rather than with someone else calling our professional shots.

This sort of entrepreneurial spirit is exactly what makes our country a land of opportunity for so many people who might traditionally have difficulty breaking through power structures put in place by gatekeepers.
