Comment from Roxanne Hawn

More than 20 years ago, I chose to become an independent contractor after 10 years working on staff for educational, for-profit, and nonprofit organizations. Best decision I ever made. I earn more money. I enjoy greater flexibility and life balance. I feel much more satisfied and enriched by my work, and frankly, at this stage in my career, choosing to work as an independent contractor provides me far more opportunities and the ability to avoid age discrimination that’s so common in typical employer-employee relationships these days. I’m deeply concerned to see the ABC Test from nearly 100 years ago being enacted in state and federal legislation that will destroy my career. Therefore, I’m commenting in support of the U.S. Department of Labor’s efforts to protect current independent contractor classifications with the new rule for independent contractor status under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
